Hi All
I am planning to try upgrading 3.4.0 to 4.2.c. I want advice on this:-
Does a direct upgrading is possible ?
I plan to do in this manner, before taking backup I will disable the search and restart the 3.4.0 instance, then take a copy of the DB, alf_data and tomcat/shared directories.
install 4.2.x in a directory(do not start),copy the alf_data/contentstore  alf_data/contentstore.deleted from 3.4.0 backup to 4.2.x alf_data. Then after checking the configuration files and chaning it  for correctnes, start the service

Is the above mentioned method correct for upgrading from 3.4.0 to 4.2.c directly
Thanks

Hi Joseph!

Thank you very much for your previous post, which indeed was a great guide and helped me to proceed with the upgrade from 3.4.0 to 4.0.e. We did a clean installation of Alfresco 4.0.e with MySQL installed in advance, then we dumped the database from the old server and we transferred the data. As soon as we started the services, the database converted and the tables increased from 84 into 100. We could also be able to login and operate Alfresco with success.

In the meantime, trying to upgrade from 4.0.e to 4.2.c we faced problems, as we can't login. What we did…
1. We did backup the data and the database again.
2. We completely uninstalled Alfresco 4.0.e
3. We installed Alfresco 4.2.c without PostgreSQL
4. We configured Alfresco on the installer wizard to connect with the MySQL 5.5 (which was already installed from the previous step/installation)
Note: We did not touch the database, as it was converted already from the previous installation of Alfresco 4.0.e
5. We moved the backupped data into the new installation of Alfresco (4.2.c)
6. We started the services
7. We tried to login.

Failed to login!

Did we do any mistake on the procedure?

Also we noticed that the number of the tables were still 100. Should we see a bigger number on Alfresco 4.2.c?

Thank you very much for all your help and your kind support. It is much appreciated.

Kind regards,

please repeat the steps, avoid unistalling, instead try moving the alfresco installlion directory to anothername

Dear Joseph,

We realized that there was an issue with the server name, which had some dashes and underscores. As soon as we changed the computer name it worked, but we had several problems. We realized that several things were not working properly.

So we decided to revert back to 4.0.e in order to see what we did wrong on that step. Guess what? Even in Alfresco 4.0.e the search and some other functions were not working properly, too! So we started searching what could caused that problem.

After several hours of trials and searches on the web we found an important information. The 4.0.e has "sorl" indexer by default, but the 3.4.0 had "lucene" indexer. So that maybe was a reason that we couldn't rebuild the index properly on the new installation (4.0.e).

We searched a lot trying to find a solution on this, but we didn't find anything that could help. Would you be so kind to help us with this if you know how to solve the issue we are facing now?

Kind regards,
Angelos Pitsos

when upgrading do not copy all the files and dir in alf_data
you need only copy contentstore and contentstore.deleted dir

Hi Joseph,

I would like to thank you for all your help and your time. Actually we have finished with the upgrade of our Alfresco Server. I have to say that it was a nightmare to upgrade it. It took almost a week in order to complete all the steps and tests but now we are done!

I believe that we have to upgrade it more often in order to avoid the "steps" that we had to do this time, but you live and learn!

Again thanks a lot. Your help is much appreciated!

Hi
You should always install a clean target version, start it up and familiarize yourself with it before attempting an upgrade.  Then stop, switch in the old data and restart.

Yes, there are new tables, deleted tables and a whole lot of other bits done to your database.  This is done automatically.
