Can i create Workflow Process without Nuxeo Studio?

Nuxeo Studio generates XML configurations, so it should be possible to "write" all the needed components in order to create a workflow type. Unfortunately, workflow is probably the most complex and verbose component in the jar generated by Studio, so that it is indeed quite hard.
