I have setup a local alfresco server with enterprise license. When I start my server I see that the server mode is shown as UNKNOWN.

Can someone please tell me what is server mode and why is it UNKNOWN. Is there any config changes I need to do to change this? I intend to use the server in non-read mode, i.e. I should be able to write content to the server

You need to set below in alfresco-global.properties.......

system.serverMode=PRODUCTION

(edit by Axel Faust‌: or TEST or BACKUP, depending on your intended use)

Thanks Krutik. Does setting it to PRODUCTION have any effect on the alfresco server?

It does not - it is merely an informational setting at this point, but may potentially affect functionality in the future. At this time the setting may primarily help you deal with (startup) log files more easily by being able to distinguish between various types of systems that you may have, i.e. most customers will have a test and a production environment, all producing log files which may potentially be collected in a common storage location / log service.
