About Tech Talk Live

Alfresco Tech Talk Live is a series of regularly scheduled sessions where attendees get to guide the discussion. Alfresco will host the sessions along with a panel of subject matter experts who will be prepared to answer your questions. While the bulk of the discussions will focus on Alfresco technology, we'll also be dedicating some time to open source and the technology space in general.

How do I attend?

The sessions are held using Google Hang-outs in YouTube Live. You can watch the event live on YouTube, and participate with us in [IRC_Chat | IRC (#alfresco at Freenode)]. The Tech Talk Live entry at the Alfresco Events page combines the YouTube video and the IRC chat. Or go to our Youtube channel, Tech Talk Live playlist. 

Schedule

Note Tech Talk Live is now on a monthly schedule. We usually meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 7am PDT which is usually 10am EDT / 4pm BST / 5pm CET.  Because of public holidays or the schedules of our guests, this occasionally changes.

The events are held as a Google Hangout On Air, with questions taken from IRC at #alfresco on Freenode.net. The event page at Alfresco.com contains an embedded video and browser IRC client to make it easy for you to participate.

All sessions will be recorded and posted to this community page after the event.

This month we are going to talk about the new Alfresco Development Framework with Mario Romano (Architect of ADF and Activiti). The focus will be on the development of a custom application in Angular2, using the ADF. On June 30th 2016 Alfresco announced the launch of its new Application Development Framework based on Angular2. There is a lot of interest around it and into the last Partners Day in Brussels, Mario showed a valuable presentation on how to use the components, with useful code snippets and practical examples.

The intent of this Tech Talk is to have an entire hour to see again the extended version of the presentation and dive deep into the samples, discussing with who, like Mario, is one of the Core Developers of the entire Framework.

Wednesday, December 3, 2014: Alfresco as a Model-Based Engineering Environment

Christopher Delp will introduce us to the open source project created by his team at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories for modeling engineering systems within Alfresco. This is an uncommon use of the Alfresco repository, and learning about it helped me to better understand the capabilities of the system and its flexibility.

JPL takes an integrated approach to systems engineering. The Model-Based Engineering Environment (MBEE) is a means of supporting the systems engineering (SE) of space missions. The Europa and Mars2020 pre- are using MBSE to develop systems models of their respective Europa and Mars missions. This is necessary since the complexity of spacecraft as well as SE practices have significantly increased with newer missions. MBSE utilizes the systems models as the formal authoritative source for systems engineering products ensuring that the products are self-consistent and mutually correspondent. The system models constructed represent the whole range of systems engineering products from mission and flight systems concepts and designs to project systems representations.

This session will cover the current Model-Based Engineering Environment being used by projects at JPL and the work being done to develop and deploy the full MBEE. We will discuss the flight project scenarios that are currently driving the development of the MBEE and the needs that have developed out of supporting that work with the current deployment. We will also discuss the trades performed to determine the technology for deployment, the implementation and extension of SysML on a non-UML platform and the user experience studies and testing used to improve the SysML model development experience.

Alfresco 5.x features a fully Mavenized build system. This is the result of community efforts that include an updated SDK with examples to guide new developers.

In this tech talk live, Gabriele, Maurizio and Ole will show a preview of the Alfresco SDK 2.0. The new SDK uses Maven to rapidly set up a development environment, and introduces a seamless IDE integration with Eclipse and IDEA. It features development aids such as hot reloading of Java classes, webscripts, and web resources using spring-loaded. The result is an unprecedented rapid application development experience for Alfresco extension developers, as can be seen in this video.

We will also discuss features of the SDK that we hope to release as part of our session at Alfresco Summit, such as the new RM archetype. We plan to have lots of additional goodies to make Alfresco development even more fun and easy!

There are many ways to hook business intelligence tools into Alfresco in order to solve these problems. Three such tools were discussed at Alfresco Summit. Learn more about reporting inside Alfresco.

Many people want to report against the data in their Alfresco repository. Examples of questions that might be answered are: ‘what time did users access the system’, or, ‘which sites have Site Managers who are external to my org’, or ‘which sites have not been modified for 6 months or more’. Then, of course there are business-specific reports that have nothing to do with out-of-the-box Alfresco data.

There are many approaches to reporting against Alfresco. Community member Tjarda Peelen, who works for Alfresco partner Incentro, has created a new open source project called Alfresco Business Reporting which uses an open source reporting platform called Pentaho to create and run reports against data extracted from Alfresco. The resulting reports are stored back into Alfresco.

We'll look at a demo of the new project, dig into some coding examples, and find out from Tjarda what alternative approaches he explored before he settled on this one. [57 mins running time].

Description: Appnovation Technologies demonstrated how Drupal and Alfresco can work together to power the new Alfresco Community web site. He’s been developing in Java for 3 years, mainly focusing on Web applications, and especially Content Management Systems. Since last year, he’s been working with the Orbitz team to develop customizations of Alfresco that provide advanced features to handle their site content.

Hernan talked about a Web Script Testing Framework which he designed with Martin Moreyra (Developer, Globant). The testing framework is an Alfresco extension that allows developers to test their Alfresco Web Scripts using what they refer to as Test Web Scripts.

Aside from a few minor audio issues, our first episode went quite well. We talk about the Barcelona Community Conference, the 3.0 roadmap, WCM, ADW, LDAP, and Backups.

Questions Addressed (in rough order):

  • Is it possible to let users be created on the fly when using Kerberos Authentication? I am asking because I have more than 100000 accounts where only a few will be using Alfresco. Now when I enable LDAP sync it will sync all accounts (including creating home spaces for them). This takes a long time.
  • With regards to WCM and deploying on a remote server, I believe the remote server needs an Alfresco instance running on it - does that instance need access to the same DB as the authoring Alfresco instance?
  • Are web forms going to be available on the DM Side?
  • How do you do archiving with Alfresco?
  • How do you backup Alfresco without shutting it down? (Hot Backups)
  • Is it possible to list the users in workflow without having to sync them?
  • We are thinking of deploying Alfresco on a Virtual Server running Centos with 4GB of RAM, 250GB Oracle DB, and 1TB Filestore. Is 4GB adequate for that?
  • Is there a way to run a script with 'admin' authority? So we can move a document to the folder that the user running the script does not have access to?
