XML Metadata extractor in WCM

Is it possible to extract metadata from XML content within a WCM (in version 2.1)? I saw an article about this in the wiki http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Metadata_Extraction#XML_Metadata_Extractor_Configuration_for_WCM.

I tried configuring as given in that, by using the 'wcm-xml-metadata-extracter-context.xml', but  it doesn't seem to work. How to register an extractor? I don't think it got registered.
