Thumbail create works fine when files are upload via the documentlibreary , but we've just upload a number of images via ftp to the doclib, and none of them have thumbnails. Do I need to create a rule for thumbnail generation for those files upload via alternative methods?

They'll be queued for creation as soon as the DocLib tries to display the thumbnails.

Another person else imported many files from a zip file using the /alfresco interface.  I'm browsing through them and when I click on one to view it, it shows myself as the last modifier.  I click back to the file listing in the doc library, and all the documents in that directory show myself as the last modifier, except one that isn't a standard extension.  Could thumbnail generation make the system think that I modified the document?  All I'm doing is viewing the listings.

Still no thumbnails. If I upload files view the browser in Share, thumbnails appear. If the files are placed in the site by any other means, no thumbnails are ever generated. Is there a way to manually start the thumbnail process? Which program specifically generates the small png file?

Figured it out. Convert was set with 644x permission. I changed that to 777x permission, and thumbnails are now being generated for all files.
