what is the purpose of ia32-libs

On the Ubuntu installation page - http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Installing_Alfresco_Lab_3_Stable_on_Ubuntu_8.10

The first step is to install lots of required packages including ia32-libs

I get

E: Couldn't find package ia32-libs‍

but carried on anyway. Is it an essential package and possibly why it's not working?

I don't use Ubuntu, but I think those are libraries that help 32-bit applications to run on 64-bit kernels. Are you running a 64-bit kernel? Is there any particular reason why you didn't try installing ia32-libs?
