I am refering the link  for upgrading my instacne, in this document nothing has mentioned about what you have to do with the database at each instance.

At points 4 and 5, they have not mentioned anything about the database. Should the old database be droped after taking backup and new one created, or u should retain the DB as itselfIf u retain the DB as it is, you can see lots of error in catalina.out once the service is started.

I think the DB should be  backed up and droped, then created start the newly installed alfresco instance. then after restoring alf_data , restore the DB back to the orginal and start the service.
This part is not there in the wiki.
Correct me if I am wrong

If you are casually upgrading, for example a dev environment,  do nothing,  just let alfresco update.

If you are being a little more paranoid and careful.

Back up the DB and restore to a new database/schema.

Let alfresco update your new copy of the database.

Then if anything goes wrong during the update you still have your pristine pre-update database.

By all means drop your old database after you are happy that its no longer needed.

Hi mrogers
thans for the reply.
As for upgrading, I have to copy the old instance 'alf_data' to the latest installed alfresco. If I do this I will be getting error message in catalina.out becasue my database is not the corresponding to the 'alf_data'.
it is counfusion over here at this DB  part.
