Upgrading steps alf_data

I'm a bit confused.
When upgrading do you initially start the server with a full database but without the contentstore?

In the 4.2 upgrade steps, after you have validated the server runs and you shut it down.

I think its says to deploy customizations  & connect to a backup of the production database and restart the server using an empty alf_data.
After you verify the customizations & the database you shutdown and then copy over alf_data.

So you would initially start the server with a full database but without the contentstore?

ContentStore and Database must be restored at the same time.

Initially you should start server with default database (created during first start) and default alf_data (created during installation).
