Why Alfresco (DM and WCM) still using the JSF version 1.1?
I think if they upgrade that to the latest version then its UI will be improved.
There are more components available in the latest version.
Is there any perticular reason they stick to version 1.1?

and also curious to know how difficult is that to upgrade the version?

According to Paul Hampton [as discussed in webinar  on Jan27 - What's New in Alfresco Enterprise 3.4] the more focus is now given to enhance "Alfresco Share" as compared to Alfresco Explorer @ Alfresco.

JSF vs SURF (Spring SURF now). I think SURF is going to win the race.

We recently upgraded to myfaces to 1.1.8 and that caused enough trouble.    So I think we will be staying with 1.1 until there's good solid reasons to upgrade.

Well i would like to make few points which explain the  its significance.

1)There are lots of extra fetures available in newer version i would like you to visit
    http://www.roseindia.net/jsf/jsf-versions.shtml

2) While customizing the alfresco UI to large extend we always face the problems because of limitation of JSF.

3) There are also various bugs in JSF's older version which were fixed in the new versions.
