Understanding how the alfresco community war file fits in.

I am very new to not only Alfresco how how CMS works. I want to understand why we would need to deploy the war file in JBOSS when, if I understand well Alfresco has its own Application server.
When we do deploy the war file in JBoss, how then will the CMS manage content since it is itself a war file in JBOSS.
If anyone can explain everything about how the architecture fits into place when it comes to the war file and CMS functionality.

Alfresco is not an application server - it must be deployed into one, but even a simple servlet container such as TomCat is sufficient.
