Running Community 4.0.d
I noticed a problem where new content would not appear in the search results. I found documentation that said to remove the index directory. I stopped the server, removed the folder, restarted. A new index folder was created. But it appears that none of the repository documents are being indexed. Is there some other trick to kick into gear?
I have confirmed that index is working for new content only. How do I force the indexing of all of the existing content?

I was looking around for metrics on how long a SOLR index rebuild should take. We have ~ 430,000 docs in our repository. It took about 12 hours to rebuild after a version upgrade (4.1.7 -> 4.1.8) What have others experienced? Is there a guide for us to estimate future rebuilds?
Does the SOLR rebuilds improve in 4.2 or should we expect a similar time when we do that upgrade in a few months?
Does the index rebuild take advantage of the all the available CPU cores, or is it single threaded?
Our hardware is quite robust, with 8 cores and 256GB memory, attached to SAN, on RHEL.

Hi Paul,
we droped SOLR from most our bigger systems (> 500k docs) since memory was freaking all the time (Community 4.0.x, 4.2.c).
Exactly at the time of writing we're retesting with 4.2.f and 5.0.a and may take this as a good starting point for a public discussion… 😉
Indexing time is not only dependant from number of doc. The main bottlenek is the text extraction and especially libreoffice/openoffice since it doesn't support any kind of multithreading and is not mature as a server component.
To get a better idea of the indexing to do's you should provide doc numbers grouped by document type (–> transformer):
- text based docs like txt, html, xml (scales well)
- pdf (scales well as long the pdfs are well formed and are not encrypted)
- office docs (word scales well since tika is choosen in most cases, other types don't scale because of libreoffice/OO limitations). We recommend real server solutions like FileConverterPro (http://www.pdfa.org/commercial/fileconverter-3/) which scales excellent and increases redering quality
- non indexed types like images, not supported types like indesign etc. (not relevant for indexing)
We'd love to get a fund for implementing a cache service between transformer and SOLR/lucene. blueprint is here. This would speed up an indexing dramatically.
