Unable to delete a file due to Exception 10040497

I am trying to delete a site in the Share interface, but it fails with an error. Upon drilling down, the culprit appears to be a file stored in a sub-folder.

I've tried deleting this file both through the Share interface and the Explorer interface, both interfaces generate the same error in alfresco.log

The exception is..

org.alfresco.error.AlfrescoRuntimeException: 10040497 Can not find the records management root for a node that is not a file plan component

What causes this, and how do I fix it ?
