Trying to get started - first some DB quesitons

Typically, I'm developing backend and web site database stuff while not having to manage the actual hardware and software myself, so my new role seems a little daunting and I apologize in advance for having to inquire about basic stuff.

I believe that I read that the 3.2 basic installer versions comes with MySQL stack imbedded, correct?
Yet I read from another post that the default stack is probably not adequate for an enterprise deployment - is that still a relevant comment?
Should I investigate obtaining a different database to use other than the default one?

I'm searching for a document management system and wanted to try out Alfresco. I hope that the learning curve to deployment isn't too steep, I feel that I have enough of a background to obtain a running and stable system, enough to test it out for our needs. Small business (~5 users) with average usage of sales orders, contracts, HR, drafting, R&D, etc.

One other question that I've not had luck in finding the answer to: the files themselves, they aren't saved into the database are they? If in fact I do stick with the community version, I would like to make sure that my transition to an alternate/paid service wont be a painful one, if the time comes.

Thanks for your help with my beginners questions. Smiley Very Happy

The mysql database is not 'embedded' and can be suitable for production use.

Alfresco used to ship with a couple of databases that were suitable for demo use only.   They wern't good enough and have been discontinued.

Upgrading from Alfresco community to enterprise should be painless.   And if it isn't then it will be Alfresco support's job to sort out your problems.

Doesn't the default installer come with MySQL? If I am advised to supply my own MySQL, is there some limitation if I used the Community version like there is with SQL Express?

When I mentioned my question regarding the future possibility of converting to a different system, I had other venders in mind. Is there anything that you can note of consideration of extracting my files when doing away with Alfresco?

Yes the default installer comes with MySql or you can set up mysql yourself and have alfresco use that.   There's no difference.

If and when you want to extract your files simply copy them out via one of the file system projections, ftp, cifs, webDav etc.

Fantastic feedback Mr Rogers.

This would be a good a run before dropping $8k on a conventional system that doesnt have as many capabilities. I just hope I dont find it too complicated to configure and install addons. …you guys may see more of me. Smiley Wink
