Too good to be true...(help config mysql?)

Hi All!

We're looking to use Alfresco in our school district for document management. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to do a basic install. We're installing on a Mac OSX 10.4.11 server. Everything worked just as described using the included HSQL database!

I'm concerned about having to move later on to a more substantial database in the future, so I thought I'd configure the current installation for mySQL. Directions seemed to be pretty simple. I used the included sql file to create the database in mySQL (I noticed that it pretty much just creates the database and user, …no tables?)

Once the database was created, I modified the two files in "extensions" directory, custom-repository.properties and custom-hibernate-dialect.properties.

Restarted the server and started up alfresco…  and i get an error 

HTTP Status 404 - /Alfresco/

type Status report

message /Alfresco/

description The requested resource (/Alfresco/) is not available.
Apache Tomcat/5.5.23

I need some help.  What should my next step be to get this working with mySQL?

Can you include any errors in the log?  Also, your custom-repository.properties.

Alfresco db script creates no tables, because the tables would be created by the bootstrapping process.   This is part of normal versioning mechanism - basically when it starts up, it checks the version, and checks if some db update scripts need to be run. 

Also, you should blow away alfresco exploded directory - sometimes when you start up it does not get exploded completely (if there is an error).

I assume you are using Alfresco Community 2.1.0 ? If so, then it is most likely that Alfresco is failing to connect to MySQL due to a config issue ("… Caused by: java.lang.IllegalStateException: No user transaction is active …"). Later releases of Alfresco should also log the underlying DB exception.

Please double-check connectivity to your MySQL instance (for default user "alfresco", password "alfresco", database "alfresco") and also that the MySQL Connector jar (eg. mysql-connector-java-5.0.3-bin.jar) has been added to …/tomcat/common/lib. You could also explicitly comment-in db.username and db.password.

Also, the exploded "alfresco" directory is under …/tomcat/webapps. If you shutdown Tomcat and delete the "alfresco" sub-directory then it will be re-created when you re-start Tomcat (which will re-expand the …/tomcat/webapps/alfresco.war file).

You may wish to take some backups of your complete installation, just in case.

Works great now!

I went through everything you described as best I could and did not see anything out of the ordinary. I even tried a few different "pre-packaged" install kits from some of the OpenSource sites. I even was able to duplicate the error by doing a clean intall, using the built in db.

I have access to the server, so I could start over when ever I needed.

Finally, after trying to figure out what was wrong and being unsuccessful,  I decided to do a clean install of OSX Server 10.4, updated everything to the most current version (of 10.4), started MySQL from the built in Apple tool, and did the simple install of Alfresco. This time everything worked just like it was supposed to.

Now the hard part, working with our HR department on how they want it set up  :wink:
