It's not recommended (or even tested) but yes you probably can.
You don't need to fiddle with the "shared" classpath because that's built into Tomcat5.
What's probably more important is your version of Java but I think we will still run on Java 1.5 even though the code can no longer be compiled on that version.
Try it and see.
