Store files on other servers and map to alfresco interface

Hi,

We need to be able to add a metadata field to documents added to alfresco.  The field would simply be a dropdown with the options 1, 2, 3, and 4.  These options reflect the criticality of the documents being restored in case of a disaster.

I've been reading the data dictionary guide back and forth, so I'm going to try to follow those directions and create an aspect to add that metadata field to all documents added to alfresco.  Someone please let me know if that's not what I need to to.

On to my real question.  So now, when a document is being added in alfresco, the user will have to choose 1, 2, 3, or 4 from the dropdown (1 being critical, and 4 being least critical).  When they click finish, I would like to have the document moved to a different server (based on the restore value they chose).  I'm thinking I can do this through a workflow (correct me if I'm wrong).  BUT, although the added documents are moved to a different server, I would like for the user to be able to go to their home space (wherever they uploaded the document in alfresco), and have the document(s) show up there (somehow map to the other servers).  So the moving of the files to other servers would be invisible to them, it would all still show under alfresco as if it was there.

Is this actually feasible?  Can it be done?  I would appreciate all feedback or comments.  And please know that I have read for days before posting this question, so I'm not just throwing it out there without doing my own homework first.

The bottom line here is that we have thousands of documents, and we need to be able to distinguish how critical it is for them to be recovered in case of a disaster.  So if anyone has other suggestions on how we can accomplish this, they would be welcomed.

Thanks a lot.

While my situation is probably not as complex as yours (re the designation of criticality to documents), I have also been trying to figure out how to map a documents data store from another server to Alfresco. It's just that our fileserver is much larger than the Alfresco server and in the long run it'll be more convenient to have all the data stored on the current fileserver rather than on the Alfresco machine. Makes backups easier, too.

I'm watching this space! 😃

atariq,

Take a look at the following post: http://forums.alfresco.com/viewtopic.php?t=8731.  I think that might be your solution.
