Status of directory versioning?

The wiki on versioning says:

Alfresco is moving to a more Subversion-like versioning system soon. See the section on versioned directories for more details.

It has been saying that since May 2006.

What is the status of that feature? Alfresco 2.1 does not seem to have it?

This is a feature of the WCM (AVM) repository, and has been available since the first WCM release (which coincided with Alfresco 2.0, released February 2007).

We are also in need of Directory (space) versioning. Although are needs are only for space metadata versioning. Which could be accomplished by using the existing versionable aspect and then updating version when metadata is updated.

Any ideas on how this could be accomplished?
