Sort and filter documents in a library by custom metadata

Out of the box or with a plugin:

Is it possible to achieve the same type of sort and filtering capability found in Sharepoint document libraries?

Further, is it possible to enable so that end-users can actually create the metadata attributes ?

I'm not looking for sharepoint – in fact, i'm pushing hard on my organization to move to Alfresco, this is just the last piece of functionality that is important to the business that doesnt seem to have an equivalent in Alfresco … i'm looking for similar functionality to manage documents similar to data records, where the relevant metadata for the document can be defined by the user and usable from the document library. 

It looks like datalists can be used to do this … anyone else using it as a replacement for this functionality?

I think seansean8 has a very good point, document repositories should be able to allow filtering of documents by metadata, such as categories or tags. I did not find this yet in Alfresco, and it surprises me since that is the first thing that would be needed, from a users perspective. Nowadays the use of folders is old fashioned and limited, since you can't assign a document do different folders at the same time without duplicating the document. Filtering is the first feature required when organizing and working with files and documents in an enterprise enviroment.
If such feature is already present as plugin, please let me know
