Share URLs in Chrome

We use Alfresco Share for our content repository. I have linked to documents on our intranet.  When clicking the links using Internet Explorer the links open without issue. When I click the links with Google Chrome, I am prompted to select a program to open the file with.

Is there something simple I am missing?  Why does chrome prompt for a program when the mime type is available and opens correctly in IE?  When I choose use a specific program to open it, I cannot check "always use this" because it is grayed out and it does not remember my selection for the current link.

Can you provide an anonymised sample url of how you link to that document. Are you linking to the document's detail page or the actual document's content? If the latter, of what mime-type is the document?
And is the web server correctly configured to return the correct mime-type in the response?
Which web server are you using?
