When I execute SimpleExample.java it appears to me the following error:

commons-pool-1.3.jar exists in the path.
I supose that this isn't the problem.

Probably a bit late now, but do you have two copies of commons-pool-1.3.jar in the classpath, thus cancelling each other out?

and i found that for some reason the build path for the project "SDK AlfrescoEmbedded" was incomplete.  For this project, I had to

Build Path -> Configure Build Path -> Add Jars -> expand "SDK AlfrescoEmbedded" and "dependencies" folders -> and add commons-dbcp-1.2.1.jar & commons-pool-1.3.jar

I also found a half dozen other jars in the SDK AlfrescoEmbedded project folder yet not added tot he build path.  I added these as well.

or just add the alfresco/bin to your system path.
