The way that Alfresco WCM works is by running a virtual server to provide virtualised views of the website. In order to do this, the default install uses the Alfresco DNS Servers to point back to your local install and the correct view.

If you are in the situation where you have a box where the relevant ports are open etc, then you should find that this works fairly well. However if you are working within a restricted environment then you'll find that your firewall settings are blocking the loopback.

I found the best thing to do was configure a local wildcard domain as described here http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Configuring_the_Virtualization_Server#Method_2:.C2.A0.C2.A0Configuring....

That then means that you are not dependant on external servers.

If you go for the first option of using Alfresco DNS servers then make sure that your virtualisation server is up and running. You should find  file called virtual_alf.sh (or virtual_alf.bat if you are on windows). Run that and then check the logs in virtual-tomcat/logs/catalina.out for errors. If there are no firewall issues you should find that everything works nicely.

Hope that is clear, get back to me if you need it explained further. I had the same problems in the early days of using Alfresco. More info also available using the link above for configuration.

Another quick solution if you are working off your local machine and you want to preview only the staging or your own sand box is to edit your "/etc/hosts" or "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\lmhosts" file for the specific URL. In your example add a line like

127.0.0.1   mysite.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net

You will need to add this for each sandbox you want to preview. To get it work dynamically you'll have do either of the options in the previous post.

because it didn't work for me
I'm doing the WCM tutorial and I modified the file like this :

127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.0.1   admin.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net
127.0.0.1   alice.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net
127.0.0.1   lee.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net
127.0.0.1   mark.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net

127.0.0.1   pat.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net

and C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts like this :

127.0.0.1    localhost
127.0.0.1   admin.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net
127.0.0.1   alice.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net
127.0.0.1   lee.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net
127.0.0.1   mark.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net
127.0.0.1   pat.alfrescosample.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net

Hello alfresco users,

I have the same problem with dteca, i get the same error message and i did the adding of the line 127.0.0.1 test.www–sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net at both hosts and ImHosts files but the results are the same. What i also noticed is that the virtual server will not start when i double click virtual_alf.bat(the cmd opens for a second and then closes). What am i doing wrong?

With regards
Simon

Hello everybody,
Have you changed the Alfresco's admin password?
if Yes,
Look the Last row of $VIRTUAL_TOMCAT_HOME/conf/alfresco-virtserver.properties file.

I solved changing value
alfresco.server.password=admin
to my new admin passsword

Cheers,
Stefx at crowdm.it
