I have tried the steps mentioned in there but no success. I have version 3.4.a also installed and that works fine but its only the 3.4.d that cant display pdf,doc,odts in preview. Nor does the thumbnail gets generated.

Surely if a update of swftools or openoffice was needed then that would have affected the version a also , since they are on same machine.

???

Are you _certain_ that the symbolic link of the libstdc++.so.5 is correct?  If both thumbnails and previews don't work, that would be my hunch.  Here is how you can tell - you should get the same results as I do below.

# pwd
/opt/alfresco-3.4.d/common/lib

# ls -lrht libstd*
-rw-r–r– 1 root root 694K Nov 29 07:42 libstdc++.so.5.0.3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   18 Mar  7 11:11 libstdc++.so.5 -> libstdc++.so.5.0.3

If you don't - and the libstdc++.so.5 just shows as a small file, and not with the ->  then you need to delete it and create the symbolic link, like this:
rm libstdc++.so.5
ln -s ./libstdc++.so.5.0.3  ./libstdc++.so.5

I assume you are using the installed/bundled OpenOffice?  Please check to make sure that you have done this:

edit your ~/tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco-global.properties and enable openoffice (true) from false… restart Alfresco, then try.

### External executable locations ###
ooo.enabled=true

_______________

After restarting Alfresco (making the change above), see if openoffice is running

ps -ax|grep office

You should see something like this:
5673 ?        Sl     0:04 /opt/alfresco-3.4.d/openoffice/program/soffice.bin -accept=socket,host=127.0.0.1,port=8100;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager -env:UserInstallation=file:///opt/alfresco-3.4.d/alf_data/oouser -nologo -headless -nofirststartwizard -nocrashrep -norestore

So does it mean if i do not select the bundled one , will the open office work fine with the aldready installed one in the machine ? I have oo 3 installed in machine .

The above command returns

Warning: bad syntax, perhaps a bogus '-'? See /usr/share/doc/procps-3.2.7/FAQ

OK, good, so we know it is running.  So when you upload and then try to preview the .DOC or .ODT file… what does the ~/tomcat/log/catalina.out logfile say?  Anything?
