I would like to learn (from scratch) how to make custom metadata fields in Alfresco Share Community (3.4.b). So first question - is it easy? ( I know basic HTML so i can pick up on code fairly easily in a day or two)

Second question - And if at all possible I would like to learn how to apply different custom metadata fields to different folders. (Example: Document Library has 2 folders, Cat folder & Dog Folder. Cat folder would have metadata specific to cats and the same for the Dog folder).

Again, I am new to Alfresco so want to know what I need to know to get to where I want to go - and eventually tie it all together (so to speak).

I think there are 2 ways to create custom metadata, depending on the requirements. You can create new content models or use aspects to attach metadata fields to objects.

Custom Model: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Step-By-Step:_Creating_A_Custom_Model  - in this example he's creating a new content model specific to what seems to be medical projects and is defining metadata fields such as PatientId.

Aspects: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Aspect.  You can also create and assign aspects to folders and documents through the Manage Aspects Folder actions if you are a Site Manager.
