PDF Renditions

I'd like to be able to create a PDF rendition, but in looking at the Rendition Service, it appears that there is no default rendering engine to do that.
Because the transformation to PDF works OK, I think I must be missing something in how the rendition service can use an existing transformation to create a rendition.
In this case, do I need to create a custom rendering engine?

for the rendition service to work properly you have to configure a working content transformer map entry with your source and target mime type.

Can u elaborate a lil bit more..as i need to implement the same but with xhtml rendering taking inputs as xhtml & xml and finally producing xhtml with xml data embedded…pls look refer to my post @
