Passthru SSO and periodically fails with IE8 ok with chrome

Have come across and interesting situation and am wondering if others have run across it as well.

We have enabled passthru with sso in our test environment and have been testing.  When accessing share site with Internet Explorer 8, it will work 70% of the time without issue.  However periodically images will be xed out or a windwo will pop up asking for a password.  Image heavy pages seem to have issues more often than others.  Usually refreshing the page will get everything working fine.

I am seeing much less of this with google chrome.  SSO works 99% of the time.

I have messed around with IE settings but with little effect.  Any thoughts?

I am currently seeing what seems to be the same (mis)behaviour.
My server is a co4.0d, with share with sso enabled. The clients are win7 with IE9.
The same client setup used to be ok with a co3.4d.

What alfresco version are you using?

I am using alfresco 4.0 D.  I have been accessing the site with windows 7 64 and IE 8 and 9 (and chrome).  Chrome works great.  We are actually considering switching our users to chrome going when we move forward with the full upgrade.  There are a couple sites we access that need explorer to open and work properly but so far in testing, they will work in the chrome IE addon.  Google does have an MSI and can be configured with a group policy so it shouldn't be too difficult to deploy.  Still it would be easier if we could get it working consistently with IE.  I'm wondering if there is a setting in IE security tab that needs to be disabled.  I am pretty sure we will hear a lot from our users if we force the switch.
