We would like to announce that a Community preview of Open Document Format support for Alfresco is now available. This has improved transformation support for ODF files, such as text, spreadsheet and presentation documents.
Used in conjunction with Alfresco's rules or scripting, it is simple to provide "drop zones" that automatically convert office documents to ODF, via the desktop, ftp or web browser application.
This is a preview build, so also includes some new features that are still being developed and may not be fully functional. An example is My Alfresco - a configurable page of components. If you're into customising Alfresco, take a look how you can use Alfresco Presentation Templates in these components and go crazy: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/User_Configurable_Dashboards
IMPORTANT NOTE: It will take at least 24 hours for SourceForge to update its mirrors for the downloads to become available! The Windows Installer package will be available soon.
For those people who read the ODF white paper and are thinking of downloading this preview release expecting to see the setup as described, it is worth noting that none of the ODF features mentioned in the paper are actually setup in this build, it will require you to manually build your own ODF Drop Zone, etc.
I have to admit I do not understand the improvements concerning ODF support. I use ODF conversion for months, and I don't see any difference between an "ODF drop zone" and a "space with a simple rule" …
Did I miss something ?
Anyway, the "My Alfresco" system looks very promising !
