office saves very slow

My Alfresco runs on Ubuntu and has a CIFS share for easy access. Everything you do on the share is quick; PDFs, text, images, etc, except saving stuff from Office 2007. That can take 30 seconds to save a simple 1 page text only word document. Any clues?

I'm confused by this behavior. If I take an empty repository, saving via CIFS is fast. If I take a filled repository (20GB) save of a doc or msg file can take a minute. This is only the case for Office documents. Txt files or image files save without a problem.

Is anyone aware of "unexpected" IO behavior of Office 2007?

No. We ended up removing Alfresco from the project because of this issue.
