Office plugin still supported?

Alfresco,

I'm wondering if Alfresco will keep developing the Office plugin that is available now that the Sharepoint integration is making its entrance. Do I promote the plugin for now (we are still on 2.1) or is it better to ask them to wait until we upgrade and explain the Sharepoint way?

Thanks!

Alfresco, can you comment on this? Is there a roadmap for the current plugin?

the plugin doesn't work right for me using the later versions of office
besides, the sharepoint protocol doesn't need any additional installations, so it's better than the plugin

Thank you for the answer Ivo. We can't use the SharePoint integration as we are still on an older Alfresco version but wanted to check if it was useful to roll out the old plugin now (we plan an upgrade later this year). As we are also upgrading to Office 2007 this may be an important issue.

In short: best not to install the plugin and upgrade to a newer version?

Hi simon

has I've written before, the plugin isn't working right for me right now…
there are a lot of machines here at office that can't run it, but there are also a few that do run it.
Interestingly the only one's that apear to run the plug-in have windows vista installed.

so in our case the plug-in isn't rellyable enough. It would give us more problems than solve problems, I can safelly say that we at Primesoft already rolled out the plugin but that's a decision that you'll need to take based on your network configuration.

We already have Alfresco3 installed and it's working fine for us. the share interface appears to be more appealling to the user than the standard one, and having a direct access using the sharepoint protocol appears to work fine with our network users.

If you're upgrading to Office 2007 expect things to stop working with the plugin, I don't see any reason to relly on it any more in my case

Kind Regards

Thanks Ivo, that's some valuable information. I'll upgrade first and try the Sharepoint integration before we try the plug-in.

The Office add-ins are still supported, but not being actively developed due to the emergence of the SharePoint module. The add-ins do work in both Office 2003 and 2007, although currently you have to have local admin privileges to install them - this is due to Microsoft changing the location of certain registry keys making it unfeasible to have one add-in support both versions of Office in an "install for all users" mode.

Thanks,
Mike
