Hi Kevin/Gavin,

Greetings!!

We have a requirement to fulfill in Alfresco, in terms of document security and need your views on this. Our client stores MS Office documents in Alfresco and they want these two features:

1. The permission options to include:
- Can Print [should even control printing using Print Screen option]
- Can Copy [including downloading of documents]

2. The uploaded documents [selected ones] should be stored in some kind of encryption that they can be only viewed from Alfresco and if user downloads it and send to someone, they shouldn’t be able to open and read.

Since Alfresco is a web based solution, I guess the only way could be to use some kind of ActiveX or similar technology to control at client side!!

Need your help as without this I won't be able to sell to this client 🙂

Thanx in advance!!

Regards,
Deep

PS: While searching on net I found Microsoft's Rights Management Services.  I'm not sure if it can give me all this, but before trying can you tell if it can be used with Alfresco or not!!

You should be able to restrict a print action or any other action by using action evaluators, there are lots of examples of these in the base product.

Yes, if you need an encryption mechanism on the client side then you'll need some form of client process for this i.e. a java applet, webstart application or activex control.

As for the Microsoft Digital Rights Management Services, i don't have any experience of the product so I can't comment on it I'm afraid.

Thanx for your response Gavin, I'll have a look at the examples [any link where to search].

Another thing, is there any change in the release dates, were we not supposed to have beta 2 in Nov end!!  I hope we are still sticking to our December GA release!!

http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Externalised_Client_Actions explains configuring actions.

Which release are you talking about. We released the final release of 1.4 last week, was this what you meant? Or are you talking about the 2.0 release?

I believe the GA release is currently planned for sometime in February.

But is it possible to use WCM capabilities with the current 1.4? What is the status in terms of deploying websites using this [WCM + 1.4]? Or would you advice on downloading latest source and use it [maybe at later date or sth].

Thanx & Regards,

The community release of 1.4 does not contain any WCM features, there was a preview release of the WCM product a while back which was based on the 1.4 codeline (a branch off it).

2.0 will see the merging of the two versions. The WCM code is progressing daily so I would suggest monitoring the HEAD branch in SVN as this is where all work for 2.0 is taking place.
