new role

Hello,
i would like to ask if its possible to create a role that can only read/edit his own document (the document a person uploaded) ?
If yes how can i do that?
In some topic i could read that i need to edit the sitePermissionDefinitions.xml is that the case? Do you have any links or documents that explains how to work with that xml?
