moving alfresco to new server and upgrading

our current alfresco is v 2.1.1 and it's sitting on an unstable server. I have a new server installed running SUSE linux 11 - 64 bit.  I want to accomplish 2 things - first move it from our old server which is a compiled unix/linux box that was thrown together some years back to the new server. I also want to upgrade to 3.0 enterprise.

I'm very leery of doing an upgrade on the old box due to instability however I don't have a copy of 2.1.1 to install to the new box to move it over and then do an upgrade. I have already stopped the database and made a copy of the entire alfresco folder in case the server dies.

Looking for suggestion on how to get this done. My thought would be to put 2.2.1 on the new server if I can find a copy of it and then pull the data in and then do an upgrade however I'm open to better suggestions/ideas. I'm a complete noob on Alfresco so operating in the dark a bit.

If you are an Enterprise customer you can download any version from http://network.alfresco.com
Alfresco support will also help you through the upgrade process.

You are right in your approach to put the same version onto a new box and then upgrade it.

You can also simply copy the old code to the new instance to the new box and just change the config files to reflect the new machine.
