Message Could not start MS Office

Hello,

We are currently running Alfresco Share 4.1 on Red Hat. Our clients are Windows 7 x64 with MS Office 2010 x32. I have set the two registry keys (BasicAuthLevel) recommended for Office 2010 clients on Win 7 and installed the MS patch for web folders. The SharePoint OpenDocuments Class is loaded in IE9 and I can access our internal MS sharepoint site as well as Skydrive so I believe it is working correctly. When I attempt to "edit online" a doc or docx file in Alfresco Share, a message displays stating "Could not start MS Office". Our unix admin has confirmed that the sharepoint module is loaded. I am unsure as to whether it is a server side issue or a client issue. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere. Thanks.

Hello,

this appears to be a client issue before the Sharepoint Module is actually used. What kind of IE are you using - the 32- or 64-bit variant of IE9? There is a known limitation that IE 64-bit cannot deal with Edit Online, as there is no 64-bit version of the ActiveX control necessary for this integration provided by Microsoft.
Have you turned on client-side logging in the Share UI? There could be some output there from the ActiveX-detection code that can shed some light on this.

Axel

You mention that there is a known issue that IE 64-bit cannot deal with Edit Online. Is this still true?

Where can I find a list of what browsers can deal with Edit Online? Is it only IE? Only IE9+? Only 32-bit?

We are using the 32 bit version of IE9. I am unsure of how to enable client side logging from within the share UI. Could you point me to some instructions? All I am able to find is server side logging for Java. I also tried using IE8 on a 2003 server machine with Office 2007 and it issued the same message.

Hello,

the Share "debugger" / logger can be enabled by setting the client-debug-autologging configuration property to true (see http://techblog.zabuchy.net/2012/debugging-javascript-in-alfresco/).

I am using windwos 7 with all latest updates as of 2015-01-06 12:48 GMT. IE11. alfresco 4.2.e

in firefox and chrom edit online works. IE11 still does not. will this problem be fixed?

In order to use IE 11 you will need to upgrade to Alfresco 5.0.b or newer.
