Mac OS X installer file not recognizeable

I downloaded and uncompressed the installer package.  The resulting file did not have a file extension and is not recognizeable by the system.  I tried adding the .pkg extension, but that didn't work.  Are we sure the file, as posted, is appropriate for installation?  Sorry if I'm missing something.  I've downloaded and installed lots of stuff without issue.

I'm running 10.6.1.

I got the same problem. This is what did the trick for me:
The installer file you mention ("filename") is a unix-executable file. You can check this by opening a command line (via the mac osx terminal) and type file "filename"  This will return the info that the executable file can be run on ppc (powerpc) and i386 (intel).

The easiest way to launch the installer it is to copy the file to your desktop (just drag it from the download area to the desktop).
Then in the command line,
type cd desktop  (change directory to desktop)
type ls                          (lists the files to check that the file "filename" is there)
type ./ "filename"         (this launches the file, the installer takes it from there)
