java.exe extremely high CPU usage

I'm not sure if this is simply a configuration issue, but whenever I do any (webdav, http, cifs/smbfs) type of file browsing java.exe jumps up to around 100% CPU usage. It doesn't really matter what size the file is. Sometimes it will take several minutes just to transfer 22MB worth of files.

I'm running alfresco 2.0 in WinXP using VMWare 6.0. All of my computers are on a domain, but I can access the alfresco share just fine if I map the drive as a different user.

I'm not sure that I have provided enough information…so I'll try and answer any questions as soon as possible. I really want to use alfresco, but this issue destroys the performance of my server.

Thanks!

FIXED:

So, I found the problem that was causing the high CPU usage. I followed another thread regarding troubles with accessing CIFS when Alfresco is hosted on a windows machine. I had been having a lot of issues with inconsistent connetion to CIFS and timeouts, etc. It was a real mess for me.

The recommendation was to turn off File and Print sharing (which is set within the network card settings). I switched this off and there was an dramatic improvement in response and performance for Alfresco! Java.exe no longer jumps to >75% when doing normal browsing, and links are almost instant. I'm guessing that the network was dropping packets (or something like that) and alfresco was waiting for them and trying to put them back together (resulting in the high CPU usage).

So…turn off file and print sharing if you are hosting alfresco through windows.

Cheers,

Lee
