ignore URL prefix

Greetings
having a minor issue, my site is up and running but . . .

  if I enter a url of sitename.org it works fine
  but if I enter http://www.sitename.org I get an error screen.

  so how do I get it to ignore the prefix in the url.
   I am running tomcat on 80 and have copied the wcmqs folder to ROOT in the webapps directory.

seems anyone using this would have the same issue, I just want it to ignore a prefix of www.
