How work the shared server??

I want to customize the Alfresco software, this for a academy activity.
I don't know so much about the software, but I'm reading the documentation for developers, and try to understand the source code.

Well, my point is that I don't know how use the shared server, how and where the save the files or documents?, and the fragment of code where i can modify it, and this way, i can customize like I want.

I seek the site where Alfresco save the files or documents, where this files are shared…
I want to modify the site where the files are saved, this by a best organization of the information inside the company…
