How to access workflow variables from beans

I have a process that defines a variable, like this:

      <task name="cg:assegnaDoc" swimlane="operatore"></task>

           users = People.getMembers(People.getGroup("respFunz"));
           </expression>
           <variable name="users" access="write"/>

Now, I want to customize the wizard for the creation of the workflow.
I've implemented a bean CustomStartWorkflowWizard and I've registered it so it works fine.
Now, I need to access from the bean the variable users define in the workflow definition.  How can I do this?
There is another way to obtain only the users of the group respFunz, so I can assign the next step of process only to a user of this group?
I'm trying to solve this problem from a month and I'm gettin crazy!
