Hosting large documents

Hi,

One of the web projects I"m working on requires hosting numerous large documents.  These documents take up over a gigabyte of storage.  My question is, what is the best approach to this problem.  Would it be wise to have these documents uploaded to alfresco where it can be easily linked to using webform controls or should they be served on a separate http server.  Will hosting these files in Alfresco incur a significant overhead in terms of storage and performance?

Thanks.

Alfresco will happily host large documents.    It just streams them to / from a filesystem.

Just to clarify, so files are not saved in the database as blobs?

No, Alfresco stores content on the filesystem, renaming it to <nodeRef>/bin under a folder structure based on the creation date.
