Group membership stored as serialized data

My company is using Alfresco 2.0 and we are securing different spaces through the use of groups.  I have noticed that the group membership is stored in the database as serialized data.  The issue I am running into that some of our groups have thousands of users in them, and trying to manage that group membership through the web client is extremely slow.  Is there any way to speed this up?

This is a generic issue to do with how multi-valued properties are persisted.
It has come up before, and is on the list.

There is no easy fix for you at the moment.
