Few questions (can alfresco do..)

Hello,

Looking at creating a documentation system, just want to ask a few questions before getting to stuck in to see if Alfresco is right for us. I have installed on a test machine and looks very promising for what we would like (in some ways better than expected).

However can I do the following things (through the default install, addons, small modifications)
1. Clearly mark docs as Drafts (not yet reviewed/published) and the other way around (Clearly marked as approved).
2. Make some docs invisible if not in group or user (or would i need to create a separate site?)

Think I might have some more questions, but these would be enough to get started. Appreciate any reply's in advanced.

Thanks,
Alex

Yes - you are spoilt for choice here and can implement something simple or as complex as you can imagine.   There are a couple of sample "review and approve" workflows built in or you can roll your own.
2. Make some docs invisible if not in group or user (or would i need to create a separate site?)
Yes - alfresco has permissions.  If a user does not have read permission then they won't be able to see a document.

Thanks for the reply, I have started trying to implement Alfresco for the usage we require. So far everything has gone well as I have started to learn the system, but have a couple more questions.
I have tried to avoid advanced workflows for the moment due to time (and I think my requirements are fairly basic), currently I have rules setup on folders to follow a simple flow: - Drafts -> Manager Approval -> Q.A Approval -> Published.
I'm having a few issues adding a just a couple of last bits.
1. If the document is rejected it gets sent back to drafts, but is there a way to generate an e-mail to who created/updated the document?
2. Can I assign the document automatically to people during the process (manager approval for departments will always be the same, and the Q.A approval will always be the same person).

If these are possible can you let me know what I'm missing or where to find further details? Or will I need to create an advanced workflow?

Thanks,
Alex.
