You should have the following in your web.xml:

   <context-param>
      <param-name>org.apache.myfaces.SERIALIZE_STATE_IN_SESSION</param-name>
      <param-value>false</param-value>
      <description>Stop MyFaces from Serializing the state to the session</description>
   </context-param>

Not sure how it is missing? Or are you using a newer version of MyFaces against an older Alfresco version? After 2.0 we have upgraded MyFaces to 1.1.5 but in 2.0 or older was using 1.1.1 - it looks like you have Alfresco 2.0 (or older) but newer MyFaces libraries - fixing the web.xml should do the trick.

Hi Kevin,

We are using the Alfresco 2.0.1 enterprise and Jboss portal 2.4.1, we made the build with build-jboss option. Do we really make the changes in web.xml, if so the change indicated to be placed under 

\root\projects\web-client\source\web\WEB-INF\web.xml

Is the web.xml is the right one since there are many web.xml.?.

we  have myfaces-impl.jar and myfaces-api.jar in the 3rdparty\lib folder

Do we need to do the change in the web.xml
or
Do we need to change the jars if  so could you please let us know what are the jars should be replaced with new ones

In addition to above, I have an another question. We planned to have the clustered environment for production. if we make the change in the web.xml. will there be any impact when we cluster due to the change.

Same here. We are using Alfresco 2.1R1 Community on Linux using MySQL and have not touched the web.xml file.

Should this be files as an issue?

If you have deployed the Alfresco WAR directly to a plain tomcat server, then you need to make changes to the following file to remove the error:

tomcat/config/context.xml

Make this change:

    <!– Uncomment this to disable session persistence across Tomcat restarts –>
    <Manager pathname="" />
