Email Configuration using alfresco-global.properties

Hi

I am on Enterprise Edition 4.1.5, I tried configuring Alfresco to use my smtp server by following the guide

and editing alfresco-global.properties with the information as it is shown in alfresco-global.properties.sample

however, upon restarting, I see that Alfresco is still trying to send emails through smtp.example.com. Why is this? Should I be disabling the email subsystem? Why is it not recommended to just change the contents of $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/subsystems/email/OutboundSMTP/outboundSMTP.properties??

I think it may be something to do with stored attempts to use smtp.example.com from before email configuration that is causing this issue. I completely reinstalled Alfresco and it works as expected using the official guide.

if you modified alfresco-global.properties ,make sure alfresco-global.properties is in your classpath .
If you are using tomcat7 make sure add shared.loader=${catalina.home}/shared/classes,${catalina.home}/shared/lib/*.jar to the end of TOMCAT_HOME/conf/catalina.properties.
