Edit file on remote server

Hi to all,
I have add a new DOC file with web client.
If I need to edit the file, I have to checkout the file, save it on my PC, edit on local machine, and then upload it again in the checkin operation.

Is possibile to edit the file directly "on the server" as happend with TXT files?
I know the file has to be downloaded to be edited, but is there a way to upload automatically the "temporary" edited file during the checkin operation?

Thank you
bye

Hello,

Alfresco offers many ways to access documents :
  • web client

  • CIFS (view documents and spaces in Windows File Explorer)

  • WebDAV

  • FTP

  • NFS
Web Client allow inline editing for text (XML, HTML, …) documents only.
The other solutions let you edit your office document on the server directly.

You can configure the solution that should be used to open your document when clicking "edit button" from the web client : in shared/classes/alfresco/extension/web-client-config-custom.xml, define a section as below

<config>
    <client>
        <!– the type of edit link to use, NOTE: inline editable will always take precedence –>
        <!– can be: http|webdav|cifs –>
        <edit-link-type>cifs</edit-link-type>
    </client>
</config>

With that exemple configuration, Alfresco uses CIFS to open documents for edition and you don't have to download/edit/upload.

Does this solution fit your needs ?

Yes thanks, I am going to try.
There could be a problem if the user hasn't the access on CISF (i.e. when he is out of office) but anyway this is a first useful step!
Thank you cleseach

If CIFS is not the best solution for your business case, you still can try to edit documents with WebDAV :

<config>
    <client>
        <!– the type of edit link to use, NOTE: inline editable will always take precedence –>
        <!– can be: http|webdav|cifs –>
        <edit-link-type>webdav</edit-link-type>
    </client>
</config>

Hi!

Which Alfresco version did you use?

How could I do this in Alfresco 3.0 labs?
