This was a bug in version 3.4.a that you can either fix by upgrading to a later version (3.4.d is out) or by rebuilding your lucene indices.
Bug: http://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALF-5552

I'm assuming you're using 3.4.a because that's what your user profile says. If you've already upgraded, I guess I would try rebuilding the indices first. You can rebuild the indices by adding index.recovery.mode=FULL to tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco-global.properties and restarting Alfresco.

Btw I just answered a question the other day about upgrade procedure for someone else who was upgrading from 3.4.a - http://forums.alfresco.com/en/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=38771 . Good luck…

I had this same problem, after uploading a batch of files via FTP then deleting them using FTP.

Adding the index line to the global properties file and restarting Tomcat fixed it for me.

Thanks,
