Developing Swing client to upload to Alfresco, with metadata

We are developing a swing client for uploading content to Alfresco. Initially we made this using WebDav transport. But now, we have the additional responsibility of uploading content with Content Type meta-data. What Alfresco APIs allow such remote uploading of documents and metadata information?
