Customizing/extending the Activiti modeler

Hi,
I've seen a few posts here asking questions around customizing/extending the Activiti Modeler (powered by Signavio), but I haven’t seen a definitive answer.

Is there a documented method to customize/extend the Modeler functionality?

The sort of customizations/extensions I’m talking about are things like adding custom attributes to the attributes panel, personalizing the list of TaskTypes and Implementations, hiding un-used attributes based on the selected Task Type etc. etc. I believe it is extremely important to have the possibility to extend/customize the Modeler so that clients can have a more user friendly Modeler that is tightly integrated with their business needs.

I have a prototype for Data Object support in Modeler and have submitted it for consideration as a seed for extended support in the future. I cloned ACT-620 which was closed and posted the details here:
