Creating a Document Repository..

Ok, I'm new, but I've searched through the Wiki, and these forums, and I'm just not finding the info I need..so here goes.

I've just installed Alfresco Labs 3.0 and here is what I'm looking to do:

- We've got a large # of image samples and they are scattered all over a storage server.  We have duplicates of these samples and what we'd like to do is load them all into Alfresco so we can

a)store them in a central location
b)sort through them
c) find the duplicates and delete them so only 1 copy per remains

What I need to know is how the heck do I create a repository and go about setting this up?

Anybody?

I'm looking at the alfresco-share feature, but in all honesty, this platform reeks of Sharepoint, which I know isn't going to fit our needs.
I'd need to be able to parse an entire server hard drive, pull the files and manage them from a central location versus adding them manually one at a time..thoughts?

Your first move will be to copy in your files via CIFS or ftp and make Alfresco the "central location."

You can use Alfresco like a shared network folder and copy and move your files around.

Then once you have done this you can bring in the other document management features as and when you need them.    You will probably want to think about what meta-data to store with each image.   And whether there needs to be any security or workflow around your images.

As for your duplicate detection will you do this manually or programatically?    How do you intend to say that two copies of a documents are equal?

Thanks for the feedback but do you have any 'how-tos'?
My problem is despite all my searching i'm not finding the right documents on how to set this monster up.

As for determining duplicate files, thats 50% human and 50% machine.  There are tools to compare images out there that can tell you if something is the 'same' and on top of that you'd just throw it into some sort of queue for manual review later before deletion.
