Codewise, what's the fastest way to lookup a path?

For both the AVM and DM repositories, what's the fastest way to perform, from Java, the following type of lookup?

service.lookupNode("/Company Home/My Path/file.txt");

Lucene PATH query on the searchService. Note that you have to escape spaces!

But you need to use the alfresco path for PATH query, not the name based path.
