Could the open source  (GPL) "TerraCotta for Spring" (see http://terracotta.org/confluence/display/orgsite/Common+Use+Cases#CommonUseCases-SpringClustering ) potentially be used to enhance perforamnce & scaling of Alfresco ?

I'm sure it could, although the next question is how much work it'd take - not knowing Terracotta I wouldn't be willing to hazard a guess.

My gut feel is that the real complexity would be around replicating the database and content store - AFAIK Terracotta only handles what's in memory, and for a typical Alfresco instance that's only a small fraction of the total state of the system.
